Botticelli Bear 2012
Oil on Canvas, gold leaf frame
In 10 generations, the animals that only exist in captivity will begin to look nothing like thier wild counterparts, changed by captivity.
Oil on canvas, goldleaf frame
Monarch the bear was a real bear, owned by William Randolph Hearst, he began his life as a wild bear, was captured, became a mascot for San Francisco, and Hearst's paper Monarch of The Dailies. Since his death he has been put on bank bonds, the California flag, and there are countless folktales written about him.
This painting is about how when becoming extinct, you also become symbolic, and mythological.
